BANGKOK, Dec 9 - Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will promote organic rice farming in Thailand by selling organic rice seed to farmers, a senior agriculture official said Saturday.
Surapong Pransilapa, director general of the Ministry's Rice Department, said his department would buy organic rice seed, grown from a pilot ricefield, and sell the seed to farmers throughout the country.
Last year, the pilot ricefield yielded 170.5 tonnes of organic rice seed--enough to enable about 14,000 seed growers nationwide to participate in the scheme, he said.
There is still a need to inform ministry officials and commercial rice traders to better understand organic rice in the same way, Mr Surapong said.
The move to promote organic rice farming in Thailand comes after a senior official of the European Commission (EC) said here yesterday EU consumers wanted products of high quality that met environmental standards and there was a growing demand for organic food.
The EU official urged Thai organic-food exporters to study EU import rules to gain a greater share of that market. (TNA)
