BANGKOK, Nov 25 - The European Union has agreed to give concessions to two categories of chicken products from Thailand, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Benefiting from these concessions will be salted chicken and cooked chicken meat.
Trade Negotiations Department director-general Chutima Bunyapraphasara said the EU has agreed to change tariff collections and import quota arrangements for both categories of chicken from Thailand. Negotiations had been underway since June.
Earlier, Ms. Chutima said, the EU informed the World Trade Organization that it would introduce two tiers of tariff systems for imported chicken and turkey meat applicable for imports within and outside the quota. The changes would have affected Thailand which is one of the top chicken meat exporters to the EU.
Under WTO rules, Thailand sought to negotiate and received an additional quota allocation as well concessionary tariff rates for these two categories of exports to the European market.
Last year Thailand exported over100,000 tonnes of cooked chicken meat to the EU but could not export salted chicken meat due to the bird flu problem. (TNA)
