BANGKOK, Oct 2 - Thailand's Department of Internal Trade of the Ministry of Commerce is set to propose measures against the expansion of hypermarket chains to the country's Business Competition Board on Tuesday.
Internal Trade Department director-general Siripol Yodmuangcharoen said he expected an endorsement from the Board, paving the way for measures to create a "level playing field" to be implemented in the retailing sector.
The Business Competition Board is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, chaired by Permanent Secretary Karun Kittisataporn.
At the meeting, the Internal Trade Department will present the draft criteria regarding retail trade.
It is also expected that the Board will approve the formation of a joint committee to resolve the ongoing feud between retail conglomerates and corner shops, with a view to setting rules for fair trade within 30 days.
Mr. Siripol said that so far the Watson and 7-Eleven chains have responded officially that they would take part in the joint committee, whose first meeting is scheduled on Wednesday (October 4).
Most large chain stores and retailers have agreed to cooperate by putting their expansion plans on hold.
However, major player Tesco-Lotus has not yet said whether it would join the initiative.
Mr. Siripol said the meeting will go ahead regardless of whether Tesco-Lotus participates or not. If the company boycotts the committee, it could be up against social sanctions, he added. (TNA)
