Energy Minister Viset Choopiban, pictured, on Thursday expressed confidence almost all local oil traders would be ready to make natural gas for vehicles (NGV) available at their oil service stations soon.
Speaking at the Technology for Environment and Alternative Energy Fair, Viset said the government set a target to increase the alternative energy consumption for commercial purposes to 8 percent from 5 percent of the total energy use within 2012.
He said the government then planned to encourage the private-sector companies to bring some leftover materials in communities to be used as fuel to produce power for consumption and sell the rest to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) or the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).
The selling prices of the electricity would be set at a reasonable level to encourage the power production, he said.
On a plan to encourage the local NGV consumption, the minister revealed PTT aimed to increase the number of NGV service stations to 200 within this year. It is expected the target would be reached.
He said Bangchak Petroleum Plc however has become the first among other oil traders to turn to sell NGV at its oil service stations and set a target to make NGV available for sale at 30 service stations this year.
From now on, he believed, other oil traders would participate since PTT is willing to increase the marketing margin of NGV to 2.30 baht from 0.80 baht per kilogramme offered to them.
The minister said the number of NGV-fueled vehicles had increased to over 14,000 units at present from less than 10,000 in December last year.
Viset conceded local fuel prices would continue to stay high so that he believed more private-sector companies would turn to install NGV equipment in their vehicles to save fuel costs.
