BANGKOK, Oct 29 -- Despite a decline in the export value of Thai-produced yarns last year due to the strong baht against the US dollar, Thai yarns remain competitive in the world market , including in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a senior Commerce Ministry official said on Monday.
Trade Negotiations Department director-general Chutima Bunyapraphasara said both Thai artificial and cotton yarns are competitive in the world market and have captured a greater market share, although it faces stiff competition from Indonesia, India and China.
Although exports value retreated in 2006, the Thai Textile Manufacturing Association believes that Thai yarns are still highly competitive in the ASEAN market, especially artificial yarn which uses only local raw materials.
Yarns are products under the umbrella of the free trade area Thailand has formed with several countries and already enforced with Australia, New Zealand, India, ASEAN members and China. The agreement with Japan is expected to take effect next month.
