NEW YORK, Sept 29 - Stressing that Thailand will hold a general election December 23, Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont said that many national leaders, including the countries of the European Union (EU), now better understand that Thailand is moving toward the democratic system through the process of democratic participation in elections.
Speaking during his recorded weekly television programme while attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and broadcast in Thailand Saturday morning, Gen. Surayud said that the international community now had no doubts about Thai politics as his government was carrying out its duties according to its earlier pledge.
Issues that are still pending, especially those concerning business affairs, could not be accomplished because this government has only limited time and it is forced to implement urgent matters first, he said.
Gen. Surayud said the three organic laws which were recently approved by the National Legislative Assembly would be forwarded to His Majesty the King for royal approval and that the election date would be fixed. Until now, he said, there is no problem in scheduling the election for December 23.
The prime minister said he was under no pressure while attending the UN General Assembly as Thailand is moving toward its election and the elected government to be installed after that.
