Thailand and Japan were among five countries benefiting from the decision handed down by the US International Trade Commission regarding increased duties on imported steel.
Backed by ailing US steel producers and the United Steelworkers of America labor union, the duties were based on allegations of dumping steel in US markets at below fair-market price. The proposed duties were to run as high as 80%.
One Thai steel producer, Sahaviriya Steel, would have been affected by the duty.
Other countries involved in the case were: Argentina, Brazil and Russia.
A United Steelworkers spokesman said the decision would be appealed to the US Court of International Trade.
