Thailand will spend 40 billion baht ($975 million) to build an elevated train network in Bangkok after studies showed a plan for a special lane for buses wouldn't ease traffic, Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said.
Work on the train line between Bang Sue in the capital and Bangyai district in nearby Nonthaburi province will start next year, Pongsak told reporters in Bangkok today.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra set a plan for the government to spend as much as 1.7 trillion baht in the next four years on subways, roads and other mass transit systems to boost economic growth and ease traffic congestion in the capital.
The investment decision today was the second change in a month on the traffic decongestion plan. On August 29, Pongsak said the government would build a bus lane instead of the planned train system.
