The government has set aside a budget of 70 million baht to ensure safe and quick passage for some 44,000 tonnes of the longkong fruit harvest from the southern border provinces to reach consumers in the rest of the country.
Farmers in the three southernmost provinces have suffered economic losses from security threats which deter the harvest, as well as sales and distribution.
As the peak harvest for longkong is about to set in, government officials yesterday met to consider measures to help both the farmers and the middlemen.
After the meeting, Prime Minister's Office Permanent Secretary Rongpol Charoenphan said the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives has been given a budget of 70 million baht to ensure that at least 44,000 tonnes of succulent longkong fruit from Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat are safely transported during the peak harvest period which runs from August 10 through November.
Under the longkong distribution plan, the Ministry will spend 5 million baht on public relations activities. The key task is to collect and distribute the fruit using the existing 29 community fruit screening centres in the region.
