SEOUL - Orders won overseas by South Korean civil engineering firms jumped last year to top the benchmark 10-billion-dollar mark thanks in large part to the booming Middle East, data showed yesterday.
South Korea secured a total of 281 overseas construction contracts worth 10.86 billion dollars in 2005, up 45 percent from 2004, the construction ministry said in a report released by Yonhap news agency.
The orders exceeded 10 billion dollars for the first time in eight years since a total of 14 billion dollars in contracts reported by the country in 1997, the ministry said.
