Construction of the first four expansion phases of Bangkok's mass transit rail systems will move much closer in mid-2006, following agreements on the conditions of construction.
The terms of reference (TOR) on building the first four of 10 planned integrated mass transit rail systems covering most of greater Bangkok and its neighboring provinces is expected to be signed between successful bidders and the Thai government as early as July 2006, Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said here Saturday.
Action construction of the first phase of the mass transit system expansion would start after the signing, he said, with construction likely to take from 2.5 to 3 years to complete.
He conceded, however, that construction of some routes might take 5-6 years pending legal procedures, including organising of public hearings and studying on environmental impacts.
The first four routes are: (1) A 66.8 km 'Red Route' from Rangsit in Pathum Thani Province, passing through Bang Sue and Hua Lampong to Mahachai in Samut Sakhon Province.
(2) A 71.4 km 'Light Red Route' from Airport Link, passing through Bang Sue, Makkasan to Taling Chan.
(3) A 43 km 'Purple Route' from Bang Yai in Nonthaburi Province passing through Bang Sue to Ratchaburana in the city's Thonburi side.
(4) A 27 km 'Blue Blue Route' from Hua Lampong, passing through Bang Sue and Bang Kae to Ta Pra in Thonburi.
Mr. Pongsak said his ministry would call a meeting with prospective investors or foreign government representatives interested in investing in these four first projects on January 20 .
