Major destinations affected as demand declines

Thai Airways International Plc, the country's biggest airline, carried fewer passengers in October as demand declined for air travel on its flights to and from Australia, the US and Europe.
The number of passengers in October fell 3.3 percent to 1.58 million from last year, according to the Bangkok-based company's Web site.
The airline filled 72.6 percent of seats with paying passengers in October, compared with 73 percent a year earlier, it said. Thai Airways, which gets more than 80 percent of sales from international routes, is trying to recover from a December 26 tsunami, which killed 5,400 people in Thailand, half of which were overseas tourists.
The airline also faces mounting competition from Singapore Airlines as well as discount airlines such as AirAsia.
Thai Airways in October filled 75.7 percent of seats for flights to Australia and New Zealand, down from 78.5 percent a year earlier, the airline said. Flights to US were 65.9 percent full in October, compared with 69.8 percent the previous year.
The airline filled 75.5 percent of seats on flights to Europe, its second-biggest market, down from 77.1 percent a year earlier. Its flights to other countries in Asia, its biggest market, were 70.2 percent full, up from 68.3 percent last year.
The airline filled 58.2 percent of cargo space in October, compared with 61.4 percent a year earlier. Thai Air carried 50,059 tons of mail and cargo, up 0.8 percent from a year earlier, it said.
Thai Airways had a 74 percent profit gain in its fiscal fourth quarter as it increased surcharges and benefited from the baht's strength. Net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30 rose to 2.35 billion baht from last year's 1.35 billion baht profit.
