Austrian Airlines, the country's biggest carrier, today began new direct flights between Vienna and Phuket in Thailand, the first European airline to add flights to the tsunami-affected resort.
Austrian Airlines plans to bring at least 40,000 Europeans to Phuket, Thailand's biggest resort island, and expects the tourists to generate more than 50 million euro ($60 million) in spending, it said today in a faxed statement.Tourists are gradually returning to Thailand's southwest resorts almost a year after an earthquake-triggered tsunami killed about 5,400 people along the nation's southwest cost. Overseas visitor arrivals and hotel bookings in Phuket plunged more than 70 percent in the six months following the December 26 disaster. Low-cost carriers including Jetstar Asia recently added flights to the island.
Austrian Airlines will fly a 205-seat Boeing 767-300 extended range aircraft once a week to Phuket during November, and twice a week from December, the statement said.
The 10-hour flights will continue all year, beyond the peak season, which traditionally lasts from November until March, spokeswoman Nawaporn Lawhasawasdi said in by phone today.
