London, Dec 5: If car manufacturer Honda has its way, drivers will no longer be caught in a surprise traffic jam, for they would be able to view traffic and road conditions even before they set out for a journey.
According to New Scientist, the Japanese auto maker plans to build tiny cameras into the wing mirrors of their cars which can see both traffic ahead and behind. This information would then be relayed as real time video via cellphone technology to a central server.
Each car would also transmit its GPS location and speed, allowing the central server to build a collection of road views and traffic information, integrated into a digital map of the area.
Anyone with a home computer or in-car navigation system can then access the real-time video database.
While Honda looks intent to put a few more digital eyes on the road with its latest bit of automotive gadgetry, it also assures customers complete privacy, saying that all video would be submitted anonymously, and that the cameras would be switched off when the car comes close to the person's home or workplace.
