BANGKOK, Nov 4 - Thailand exported more than 6.1 million tonnes of rice during the first ten months of 2006 and is confident that exports will reach 7.5 million tonnes as targeted earlier, a senior Commerce Ministry official said Saturday.
Vichak Visetnoi, deputy director general of the Foreign Trade Department, said total rice exports during January-October amounted to 6,118,207 tonnes valued at US$2.06 billion.
He said the ministry was confident that rice exports this year could reach 7.5 million tonnes worth not less than US$2.34 billion as targeted by the ministry earlier.
Reaffirming that Thai rice exports are not tainted with genetically modified organism (GMO), Mr. Vichak said that Thai trade representatives stationed abroad would inform importers of Thai rice in a bid to raised the level of confidence of foreign buyers.
The move follows discoveries by European Union and French officials who found tainted GMO rice exported by the US and China. (TNA)
