THE Kingdom is continuing joint action with Australia and Brazil against the European Union (EU) regarding the European trade bloc's sugar subsidy, which exceeds the limit permitted by the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to a senior Commerce Ministry official.
Apiradi Tantraporn, Director-General of the Department of Trade Negotiations, told journalists on Friday that despite Thailand, Australia and Brazil winning their case at the WTO in Geneva, resulting in the EU being notified of its obligation to reduce its subsidy for sugar exports to not exceed 499.10 million euro (Bt 23.4 billion or US$631.1 million) or 1.274 tonnes annually as of May 22, the European trade bloc has refused to comply with the WTO ruling.
The EU sugar export subsidy for 2005-2006 is, therefore, expected to be as high as 7-8 million tonnes, nearly six times more than the amount allowed by the WTO.
Thailand, Australia and Brazil have jointly lodged a new petition on the problem to the Geneva-based world trade body and are awaiting a new ruling from the WTO before taking further action against the European trade bloc, according to Ms. Apiradi.
The three countries have officially written to the EU asking to implement their right to seek compensation or implement retaliatory action against the EU, the senior official said.
