BANGKOK, Nov 23 - Thailand is mulling a plan for procuring arms from Pakistan, Thai Royal Army Commander-in Chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said on Thursday.
Speaking after returning from a visit to Pakistan, Gen Sonthi, also chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS), said during the visit that he viewed an exposition displaying arms which are mostly produced by Middle East countries, good-quality and very low-priced. The weapons displayed at the exposition were particularly manufactured to be within developing countries budget limitations.
"We are interested in many of them," the army chief said, adding that "if the Army decides to buy arms from Pakistan, it won't affect Thai relations with the United States, which is one of Thailand's key arms suppliers.
Even if Thailand decides to buy arms from Pakistan, Gen Sonthi said, it won't buy heavy weapons.
"Our country is not rich, so we have to choose those low in cost and high quality," the army chief said. (TNA)
